Share with us the process of you learning that you are indigenous, and how you felt during that period? When I was preparing for my senior high school entrance exam, my mother asked if I wanted to take the indigenous language proficiency test. My first reaction was, “what? I can do that? Am I indigenous? How have I never heard you talk about this growing up?” Then I recalled the time I spent with my grandmother on my mother’s side, how she would speak to me in our language, but no one ever told me that it was the Truku language......

Have you visited Smangus before? How did you imagine Smangus to be? I have never visited Smangus before, but I have visited Cinsbu on the other side. What is it that made you decide you want to come home and learn about your culture? It was in 2014, my junior year in university. I returned to my indigenous community to take part in the paSta’ay, and that was a real wake-up call. The song and dance began at 6 o’clock that day, and I was sitting in the tourist area next to the ritual site. I carried with me the traditional indigenous clothes my grandmother gave me, but I couldn’t bring myself to put them on...

Born to a poor family, Chang Jen-Chieh, the Atayal hunter and founder of Wulai Hunter school, followed his schoolteacher to hunt and fish in the mountains as a child, exchanging his kill for rice and money to help support his family. Now, as an adult, he turns the hunting and survival skills he has acquired since childhood into curriculum knowledge to pass it on to a wide range of people.

There is a group of people packed with weight, making the difficult journey along the dangerous trails in the mountains. They are the driving force behind many mountaineering dreams fulfilled, and the anonymous heroes assisting academic research and renovations and repairs in the mountains. They have an official title the Mountain Worker, but the public generally call them the Porter.

Turning from fighting for indigenous rights in the streets to questioning of self as “man”, Dakanow’s music journey is both radical and unrestrained. He says with unruliness, “I write and sing songs not for commercial profit or audience support, for me, music is life.”

Despite totally blind in both eyes, Malieyafusi Monaneng sees more clearly than anyone the plight of the disadvantaged situation indigenous peoples is in. He aims straight at the center of issues with his poetry, and experienced the turbulent age in the era of indigenous movement by taking part in the establishment of Taiwan Indigenous Peoples’ Right Advocacy Association and convening the indigenous community squad. To this day, he still speaks up for indigenous peoples.

Many indigenous people in Taiwan are living in non-indigenous cities and towns due to changes in environment and for work or study. “Coming home” is the ultimate wish they have in their hearts, and many of them bring what they have learned in the cities back to their home villages to give back to their community. These different types of trade become the livelihood of many returning community members.
